This picture was taken in Alabama in Dallas County. The actual town is called Selma. It was taken by Walker Evans and was published in 1936. The picture is outside with natural lighting in a rural setting during the day. All you can see in the picture is a very old store with a fake storefront that seems to be very rundown and old. It appears to be abandoned. The most distinctive feature of the photograph is the contrast of light and dark between the inside of the store and the outside. It’s a business structure surrounded by very little, if anything, except for a little bit of flattened out grass. The tone is definitely sad and empty. I think this is a perfect example of what life was like in the 30’s for a lot of people who couldn’t afford very much because of their situation and surroundings. If I could ask anything to the photographer, I would ask what the building was used for and why it was so special that he took a photo of it.

This is a photo from Eutaw, Alabama taken by Dorothea Lange in July of 1936. The location is on a farm in the middle of the hot summer. The sun is definitely beating down the people in this photo because it is so deep in the summer. This makes the conditions harder. The picture it taken outdoors in a very rural area. In this picture, you can see two African American people farming. They seem to be in their mid twenties or around that age but in any case, they are not very young. There is no color in this photo. I think what catches your eye immediately is the two people farming. Their posture is very interesting because they are hunched over as if they are tired or sad. There are no buildings in this photograph that are very visible except for a very few faint ones in the background that must be the farm house. The picture is kind of sad but very intense at the same time. I think that this is a very important picture.

This photo is by Jack Delano from May 1941 in Greensboro, Alabama. It was taken indoors and not much else is visible except for the fact that the home seems to be very small and poorly furnished. There are four people in the photograph and they are all crammed into the home and three of them are sitting on a bed together. One is older, one is middle aged, and two are children. They are all African American men. The room they are in has walls that are dirty and lined with what looks like photographs. The people look sullen. The photograph is also really dark but fading in contrast and intensity.
